Is It Ok To Travel Here? | Understanding Argentina's Economic Crisis
📍 Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina
For this video, I wanted to answer the question, "is it ok to travel, especially to countries like Argentina who are experiencing economic hardships?" Because I needed someone much smarter than myself to help me answer that, I met up with Nicolas who runs walking tours with his company Social Cultural here in Buenos Aires. He was kind enough to explain a bit about Argentina's history and its current economic situation, and helped unpack why he thinks traveling is vital to helping remind us we're all in this together.
You can find out more about Nicolas' walking tours here:

It's funny, the first time I heard the "colonizer" thing, I was in Puerto Rico. I had to gently point out that our Spanish pals murdered all the Taino, who nailed the tribes before them. Inflation is the biggest tax, it's how all countries take from their citizens. I had a discussion with a guest from Norway, she was telling me about how college was free there. It was a long discussion, but in the end she agreed that education wasn't really free, and I agreed that it was still a better deal than the wars that we had paid for in the states, instead of college. Meanwhile, tourists go to a city, spend their money with the locals, and then go home. The money stays there----you're not taking anything away from the portenos.

Great guest with way more authority than me but I'm hoping for Melei and Argentina - these problems will take time and sacrifice to solve. Visited Argentina in the 90s and it still calls - amazing country, people, food, and culture. I'm rooting for them and planning to visit again in upcoming year. Viva Argentina!

The problem is your friend has a very clear bias towards a particular political sector (a.k.a. the Kirchners), so his whole explanation is useless. He literally says they did everything right and everyone else did everything wrong. His knowledge of the economy is very, very poor. The Kirchners were the source of the current economic debacle (especially Cristina). Sure, they paid the whole IMF debt, but the spent all of the Central Bank's reserves and after that, they started printing money even though anyone with basic economic knowledge will know that causes inflation. And not only that, but their governments were plagued by corruption scandals and many other shady dealings (like manipulating the inflation statistics or not reporting poverty statistics when the economy started to go south). And yet your friend doesn't say anything at all about that. And he also says that the current government is doing everything wrong when most serious economists, both local and international, agree in that he's taking the necessary steps to put the economy back on track after the disaster left over from the previous administrations.

I love the vibe of Buenos Aires. People are very open and inviting. Plus you have so many things to do and see. Great food, beautiful architecture and amazing public transportation. Of course, like in most big cities all across the world, some areas are a bit sketchy but in general I feel safe walking and moving around. Nightlife is insane, especially if you’re not a night owl 😄

you got an absulutely biased guy making all the wrong diagnostic about the current situation in Argentina. He basically says that the leftist government of Kirchner did everything fairly well…. Absolutely misleading. The first governemt of kirchner was able to stabilize the country, but decadence started with the second government of Kirchner in 2008. The REAL reason of the argentinian drama is much more simple. It is a country that for decades, has been spending more that what they collect. Just simple as that. And if you spend more than what you colllect, the only way to finance yourself is: 1. either getting more and more debt 2. or printing money (which leads to hyperinflation). The country is broken and Milei had to cut spending. The country has in 6 months achieved fiscal balance. Leftist are very unhappy because of this because they have been used to have a lot of free social benefits. But the sad true is that there is no other way.

I go to Europe often..went to the US for the first time last year and honestly I do not see or feel anything that would make me quit living in BA and move to..I dont know..Berlin, Paris or LA. Actuslly, I found this city better in many aspects. To start with cleanliness and social cohesion. In spite of the crisis you dont see as many homeless people, sketchy characters, people completely on drugs on many streets etc. There was some feeling of "decademce" in some places, which is worse than just an economic crisis that sooner or later will end. I dont know if this decadence has to do with some complacency from people from Western Europe or the US (thinking they are already too rich and therefore nothing can change that) or out of control migration that is changing the social fabric, but you can feel it.

The answer is simple, no. You are not creating any problems. And even if ZERO foreigners go to a country, some areas in some cities will be "gentrified" anyways. Not everyone can live in Palermo or Belgrano R in Buenos Aires or Brickell in Miami or Chelsea in London. Its just the way it is. And rent is a problem in all major cities where many people wanna live. Most cities have other areas that are still nice and cheaper and also areas close by but outside the city. And as for prices, some areas will always be very expensive, that didnt start now and will never go away.

The bald guy is a leftist. He didn't say WHY Macri borrowed money from the IMF. The reason why he did it, is he had to pay the debt contracted by the former president, the corrupt leftist Cristina Kirchner. Macri had to pay the maturity of the Bonar X (AA17) bond. Leftists only repeat a fabble they read in Marx books. They are stuck in the seventies and are responsible for the country's current situation.

With due respect, you need to interview someone who has a minimal level of education and understanding of the country's problems, instead of a person who just repeats things he sees and hears without understand causal effect and root cause behind all of that. Milei inherited a country with -15% of fiscal deficit when you count the treasury + central bank finances.....-15%!!!!! And that huge hole in the accounts was being filled by reckless money printing (given that absolutely nobody was willing to lend money to such reckless administration....) which led to a 271% of annual inflation in 2023....and accelerating dangerously fast when Milei took office in December....bringing the country to the verge of hyperinflation meltdown .....which would have been a catastrophic scenario bringing over 90% of people into poverty.......so Milei had to take a very radical shift in economic policy making a dramatic adjustment in spending to eliminate the deficit and balance the accounts immediately, and he said that very clearly both in the campaign and at his inauguration, and all along since, because that was the only way to avoid disaster.....and he said that this was going to very tough and that poverty would be increased, same with unemployment and other social trends....in the short term....and we are still in the short term...it is only 6 months + since he started......2025 will be a different year where all the hardship the country is going through will start paying off.....because when you cut money printing you bring inflation under control....when you bring inflation under control....salaries gradually start strengthening in real terms....and very importantly.....credit lending start flowing in the banking system....something not seen in Argentina since 2017.......due to the inflation problem......and plus once the bill to be passed by congress in the next days comes into effect then big investment will start to kick in as this bills provides legal certainty and tax incentives for big investment to flow into the country......in summary.....the situation is awful because the last administration left literally an atomic bomb just about to explore in the country.....and Milei had to take extreme measures to prevent that from happening.....it would be good that this man talks about the fact that for the presidential campaign, the minster for finance and candidate for the presidency that Milei defeated, spent the equivalent of 3% of the GDP (in a country with -15% deficit!!!!) to win votes and try to win the election....that is the level of recklessness, irresponsibility and evil the previous government had....and now the whole country is paying for that "party"....it would be good the interviewer learns a little more then truth!!!

i hope you ve been enjoying our Country! The anthropologist you saw seems to me to have a more left-wing tendency, that is, he supports Kirchnerism, which is what created the disaster, not Macri. This disaster began in 2011 when Cristina Kirchner wanted to go above the institutions and remain in power forever. The economy reacted badly and she put a trap for the purchase of dollars that ruined many sectors that we depended on and are fundamental as is the purchase. housing and the place where Argentines save. All because in 2007 Nestor Kirchner fired the economy minister "Lavagna" who had a more traditional plan and who was the one who truly got us out of the crisis of 2001. Our problem was that they tried to establish 21st century socialism in Argentina, Macri's debt was not my cause, but a remedy for what was happening at that time. And the crisis of 2001 was caused by the theft of money from the Peronist political party 1 to 1, which was a solution to our problems with inflation and generated wealth that did not exist, and because it changed from a mostly status system to a private one. , they don't usually tell that. So the crisis in which a president resigned in 2001 was actually a civil coup d'état caused by Peronists. Cristina Kirchner put us in debt, but by "stealing" the money from retirees and Argentines, she increased much more than the debt with Macri. It's good to hear all the bells.

´For the life of me´, i simply cannot begin to fathom just exactly how it might possibly be an indication of peoples´ ¨hope¨ that they should vote for any ¨far right-wing¨ political candidate; has the world´s - let alone Argentina´s very own - sociopolitical history and experience not shown just what sort of unpleasant outcome it is which most often tends to be the result of such misguided a course of action as that.... ~A very well done and interesting video, this, **Travis** ❤💖🩷

I think what I learned from you were insights and a different perspective on places that I was familiar with even when I speak the language. It holds true with other bloggers I follow. I don’t travel as far and wide as I once did. You are adding to the economy because you were spending money there. The naysayers on social media are almost amusing in the depth of their ignorance. So I agree with the guy below who told you just keep on doing it. There are people like me who have followed you for a long time who look forward to whatever you produce, and as you know from time time I write and make comments to you. Arriba Travis!

You're the best for sticking with me this long, Bill! And you're absolutely right - some people (mostly on TikTok) are verrrry amusing in their ignorance. But happy to have this amazing community of viewers on UA-cam!

So many places with triple digit inflation turn to just garbage in the street and chaos. Is Argentina an outlier in this regard? I've been to Panama City, and yeah, some dirt and garbage even with a pretty healthy economy. But it seems (a lot) more than BA from the vids I've seen. Wondering why if that's really the case. Nothing against PC; I've made money there, and enjoyed some awesome restaurants. Very Americanized and very similar to Santa Ana, San Jose CR. Buenos Aires seems a lot more European. Why the difference I'm wondering.

That's such a great question and I wish I had asked Nicolas! Especially because they've had an inflation crisis for an extended period of time at this point. If I had to guess, I think it has something to do with still having strong unions representing those workers here, but definitely something to look into!

contrary to what was stated: A typical middle class neighborhood is Palermo, and around 80% of both the city and the metropolitan area (17M inhabitants) have a quality of life similar or higher than Palermo. Here is a broad view of all of Buenos Aires (City and suburbs) www.youtube.com/@FedSher/videos

Love this Travis! The reason this new channel direction is going to succeed is because you are letting someone else do the talking. You are actually seeking out people with something to say and then getting out of their way. Well done.
